Welcome to the Paraguayan Historical Archive

This is a searchable archive of historical Paraguayan newspapers, books, war documents, and other media — most of it from the era of the War of the Triple Alliance (1845–1904). It lets you read, search, and connect original sources across the whole collection.

What you'll find

Newspapers, books, war documents, diplomatic papers, podcasts, and documentaries — gathered into one place and made searchable in Spanish and English.

Why this archive exists

Much of Paraguay's 19th-century press survives only as fragile scans scattered across collections. This project digitizes, transcribes, and indexes them so historians and curious readers can actually search the words on the page — not just browse images.

How it began

This archive was created by Jim Cason, a longtime U.S. diplomat who served as the American ambassador to Paraguay.

"If you're a good diplomat, there's no country you should dislike, because there's always something nice to find." — Jim Cason

Adapted from Jim Cason's profile in Coral Gables Magazine.
